If I were you, I would write my PhD dissertation/thesis on something that is connected with the Nazis Germany. Particularly I would like to investigate such a German institution as Abwehr.

If you are interested in this topic, I can give you some facts about Abwehr.

Abwehr was created in 1919 by the Weimar Republic. According to the Treaty of Versailles, Germany was not allowed to have its own intelligence services and Abwehr was designed as the organ of counter-intelligence in the armed forces. But in reality, Abwehr was accomplishing a reconnaissance against USSR, Poland, France, and Great Britain.

The goals of the Abwehr:

  • Collecting the secret information about the enemies’ armed forces, its military and economic potential.
  • Ensuring the secrecy of the German military preparations.
  • Disorganization of the enemies’ rear.
  • Struggling with the foreign agentry in the armed forces and military-industrial complex.

In the field of activity of the Abwehr there were the countries that the Abwehr was the most interested in (USSR, France, Great Britain, Spain, Czechoslovakia, Poland); countries of the collateral interest (USA, Switzerland, Romania, Belgium); counties in which the intelligence was banned (Italy, Japan, Austria, Hungary, Estonia).

So, if you are interested in the events of the Second World War or in some aspects of the German history, you can write your PhD dissertation/thesis on this topic.
